CIO - Cry it Out

Post by Care Bear on Thu May 29, 2008 1:05 am

Who does this?
How does it work for you?

I'm particularly curious about why this is such taboo among some mothers, it doesn't seem like a bad thing to me. Something won't work for everyone right?

To cry it out is to leave the baby to be by itself and cry until they are done, and fall asleep. Sometimes this is the only way one can get their baby to sleep, is to just let them cry it out! Some babies cry for no reason and can't be soothed any other way.

I tried it once with Summer because she was being such a little demon one morning, but I only lasted like 10 minutes and couldn't take it anymore. I felt so awful! But some people swear by it and it's not necessarily harmful either it's just hard to do.

i think its ok to let them cry a little but i think as a baby they defiantly need
reassurance tht ur there with them still, i dont like the idea of leaving a baby on its own to cry i think tht could b very traumatising.
when they get older it could work for some mothers but im defiantly not
into the idea of leaving a baby on its own.
maybe if someones going to try the crying it out method i think they should still rub the baby and let it know ur still there with it...
i duno just my opinion.

I agree with you, it's hard enough being a baby as it is, I don't like leaving Summer to sit and cry to even go pee! Just today she was crying/fussing so I bounced her and held her until she fell asleep and just let her lay there on my chest, and I waited for my husband to get home before I would move her because I didn't want her to cry...

I REALLLLY had to pee though! Laughing

I will be completely honest. I have done the whole CIO deal, and Ameerah will cry for 10 mins, and usually get herself to bed.If she doesn't get herself to sleep after 10 mins, I go in and comfort her give her a paci, and she calms down enough to drift off. I don't slam people who do CIO, and I'm a frequesnt on another parenting forum, where people will slam another mama if she lets her baby CIO.

On other parenting forums mothers will slam other mothers for just breathing differently.. it's truly sickening. Summer can cry for a loong time so we don't try CIO anymore. I think she's too old to be tricked at this point anyway.
